Planning Guide
Siesta Key Sunset Times
And the exact window to book a beach session, month by month
Siesta Key faces west. The sun sets straight out over open Gulf water rather than behind a treeline or a row of condos, which is the single biggest reason the light here is worth planning a trip around.
It also means the timing matters more than people expect. Sunset moves by nearly three hours across the year, and the clocks shift twice on top of that. Below is the whole year, plus when a photo session should actually start.
Sunset by Month
Calculated for Siesta Key at 27.27°N, 82.55°W. Each row shows the range across that month.

| August | 7:54pm – 8:21pm | 6:39pm – 7:06pm | EDT |
| September | 7:20pm – 7:53pm | 6:05pm – 6:38pm | EDT |
| October | 6:49pm – 7:19pm | 5:34pm – 6:04pm | EDT |
| November | 5:37pm – 5:49pm | 4:22pm – 4:34pm | EST |
| December | 5:37pm – 5:47pm | 4:22pm – 4:32pm | EST |
Times are calculated for the horizon at sea level and will be within a minute or two of what you see on the beach. Clocks go forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, which is why March spans both zones.
The Short Version
What This Means in Practice
Latest sunset: 8:30pm, late June
Midsummer sessions start around 7:15pm. Late, but the light lasts and the beach has usually thinned out by then.
Earliest sunset: 5:37pm, late November
Not December, as most people assume. Late November evenings mean a session starting around 4:20pm, which is easy with small children.
Start 75 minutes before sunset
Time to walk out, settle in, shoot through the best light, and still catch the color that comes after the sun drops.
The clock change is abrupt
Sunset jumps an hour overnight in March and again in November. If you are booking either side of those dates, check the table rather than guessing.
The best color is after sunset
The fifteen to twenty minutes after the sun goes down often beat the sunset itself. Do not pack up early.
Midday is the one to avoid
Overhead sun means hard shadows under the eyes and everyone squinting. If midday is your only option we will find shade.
What About Sunrise?
Worth considering, especially in peak season. The beach is close to empty at dawn and the light is just as soft.
The trade-off is direction. Because Siesta Key faces west, the sun comes up behind you over the island rather than out over the water, so you lose the sun-over-the-Gulf backdrop that the evening gives you. What you get instead is clean, even light, an empty beach, and no wait for parking.
If you have early risers in the family anyway, or your evenings are already committed to dinners, it is a genuinely good swap.
